Delta's Report

For Delta's "Canadian Healthy Living Award" in Cubs, he needed to do research and create a report on a Canadian outdoor or sports person that made a significant contribution to Canada or the World.

After considering some options, he chose Jacques Plante.  After reminding him about the 5W's, he wrote this report.

------------------

Jacques Plante was the first person to use a hockey mask in a game.

He did it because he was hurt by a slap shot to the face.

He wore it on November 1, 1959

The hockey game was at Madison Square Garden

This is a significant contribution because the game of hockey is a LOT safer.

--------------

After, he decided to recreate the scene in Lego...

May Have Found It?

For quite some time, I have been looking for a good Canadian History "spine" book for Elementary aged students.  I wanted something that was a good "living book", that covered at least most of the time period from discovery to at least the 19th century, would be available to me for free (or very inexpensive), and wouldn't put me to sleep when I tried to read it.   This combination hasn't been easy to find.  The closest I have found so far was "The Story of Canada" by Janet Lunn, which I can borrow from my library.

By the way, I swear the most common name of Canadian History books is "The Story of Canada", followed closely by "Canada's Story".   I have found several by these names.

Well, I think I have found one that fits!  It is called.......  "The Story of Canada".  You just knew it, didn't you.  This one is by E. L. Marsh.  I'm not sure of the date of original printing - it looks like it is around 1912 or so.  The first 2 chapters have been quite engaging, and it is free on Archive.org - it also has been reprinted (a scanning from the looks of it) and is available on amazon - for those that like to hold a paper book in their hands.

Over the next while, I am going to continue to read it, to determine if it is going to be a replacement for the Lunn book... but so far it looks promising.  Of course, it doesn't cover the last 100 years or so...   I also have to admit that I was hoping for something that would be as extensive as the U.S. book "This Country of Ours"... to make figuring out the future plans easier.

I just hope that my kids can get to enjoy Canadian History.  I didn't as a kid, and I think the reasons were brought out well in the book "Who Killed Canadian History?"

Canadianized AO Year 1

There are some ideas on Canadianizing AO here, but for Years 1-3, we just didn't have access to any of the Canadian History books recommended.  I am still not totally satisfied with the history books we have found - but will make use of what is available.

My general plans for all the years, are available here, (there are some changes) - but this post will give much more detailed information for Year 1, including fitting it in the AO Year 1 schedule.  Note that there are changes from the last time we did Year 1 - so there may be changes in the future.

Most of the year will be based on AO's Year 1

There are some changes listed here which are personal changes instead of Canadianizing....

Booklist Change Summary:
  • Remove - Benjamin Franklin
  • Remove - George Washington
  • Remove - Buffalo Bill
  • Add - Hudson - Janice Weaver
  • Add - Laura Secord - Janet Lunn
  • Add - Alexander Graham Bell - Elizabeth MacLeod
  • Add - Canadian Minutes (the Canadian Minute ads from Historica - we watch them online)
  • Remove - Blue Fairy Book (We didn't enjoy many of the Blue Fairy Stories selected by the AO Advisory.)

  • Add - Selina and the Bear Paw Quilt
  • Add - A Fiddle for Angus
  • Add - Very Last First Time
  • Add - Dragonfly Kites
  • Optional in Free Reads- Pocahontas, Red Fairy Book)
  • Note - we also don't do Trial and Triumph
Note - I generally tried not to add something without removing something, so as not to overburden the year. I was quite careful to balance out the Rainbow Fairy Books, similar to how the Blue Fairy Book stories were scheduled.

History - Family Rotation

We will now be doing history in a 5 year, Family rotation. I think that this will allow some flexibility, while still allowing a fair time for each time period. This means each student will go through the rotation twice, with 2 other years left.

These 2 years can be used in a flexible way...

a) Spend the first couple of years doing light history (ie, 50 famous stories, A Pioneer Story, story picture books) - a good option for the oldest child

b) Do whatever period of the rotation an extra time. - a good option for middle children

c) spend the last couple of years focusing on a period of history the child wants - a good option for youngest child.

d) graduate a couple of years early (if ready on other subjects)

e) Spend the last couple of years focusing on a period of history required in High School by the government

f) don't do history for a couple of years (grades 1 or 2, or grades 11 and 12) to allow time for other subjects/interests

g) combine the above options (ie, 1 year at one end... 1 year at the other...)

This post just has an overview. There will be more detailed posts later.

Pre-rotation (optional)
50 Famous Stories
A Pioneer Story - Greenwood
other favorites

Note - similar time frames from the Synge history books are an option if you don't own A Child's History of the World.

Ancients

A Child's History of the World (ch 1-41) - Hillyer OR
no Canadian History... instead do Canadian Geography (spine not chosen)

Middle Ages
(~500 to ~1453)

A Child's History of the World (ch 42-60)
The Story of Canada (ch 1-2) - Lunn & Moore OR My First History of Canada (ch 1-2) - Dickie

Rotation 3
(1453 to ~1800)

A Child's History of the World (ch 61-77)
The Story of Canada (ch 3-part of 4) OR My First History of Canada (ch 2-13)

Rotation 4
(1800-1919)

A Child's History of the World (ch 78-84)
The Story of Canada (rest of ch 4 to part of ch 9) OR My First History of Canada (14-19)

Rotation 5
(1920 to present)

A Child's History of the World (ch 85-91)
The Story of Canada (rest of book) OR My First History of Canada (20-21)

Older Students, (generally through their 2nd time through the rotation) might also use "The Beacon Lights of History" by John Lord like a spine. As I don't have any students at this stage yet, I'm not working out the readings... but I am noting it here so I don't forget it!

Help - History Year 1

Hey everyone, I could use some suggestions for Canadian History for Year 1. I took out the potential books I had had listed from the library, and didn't like them at all. Is Canada really THAT devoid of good History Books for young children?

I'd like to find something good about the Native Canadians, and a couple of good biographies. And I really want something historical, not just literary. (I have a few good suggestions in the literature selections)

What I looked at:

Canada's Natives Long Ago by Donna Ward - just TOO textbookish - it just seemed dull, and had vocabulary drills etc in it.

Laura: A Childhood Tale of Laura Secord - I thought this was a biography of Laura Secord writen for children... but it is a fictional story from her childhood. Might have been a nice fictional addition, but not what I have in mind at all!

Christopher Columbus by Schaefer - This is a little biography, but is written at a beginner reader level...

"Sir Alexander Mackenzie" from the Discovering Canada series - Is marginally ok, but is the busy style of boxes and little blurbs all over the page... to distracting.

Is there nothing out there like the AO selections for US and World History??? with Beautiful pictures, factual information, written in an engaging style, at a proper level?

Please send suggestions!!!

Canadian History Plan - Updated!

Note - this is now out of date, but is still useful for Canadians using AO. Also, many of these resources will be being used with the new rotation system.
See new plan
II have decided to make things line up more with the AO History timeline. I am keeping the original plan on the blog, but this is an alternative.

Depending on the resources available to you, I am providing two options.
Option 1:
The main resource is "Great Canadian Lives - Portraits in History to 1867" (hereafter called GCL) - Unfortunately this book is out of print and can be expensive. (My library has several copies.) There is a copy online here. I'm not sure what would be up with the copyright, but this seems to be an educational site.

The other resource is "My First History of Canada" by Donalda Dickie & Rudiger Krause (Hereafter called MFH)
I generally read the time period in "My First History of Canada" as an overview, then read "Great Canadian Lives" for the short biographies.
Option 2:
The resource for this option is "The Story of Canada" by Janet Lunn and Christopher Moore. (Hereafter called SOC)
For Both Options:
One other good resource is the Canadian Minutes - the little ads from TV. They can be found here. I think that new ones are being added still - But am putting suggestions in the plan.

I expect to change some of the AO biographies from Americans to Canadians....

Year 1 - AO timeline is "early history, focusing on people"

Canadian History Plan

Please see the new version
This version has been kept for those that would prefer to use it.

It has taken quite a while, but I have a basic plan for Canadian History for the first few years of homeschool

Year 1 - A Pioneer Story by Barbara Greenwood. (also called A Pioneer Sampler???)

Although not in a chronological order, this is a nice gentle book to ease the student into thinking about the past, without worrying about any real historical details.

Also

A Child's History of the Life of Christopher Columbus by Josephine Pollard

Year 2

- Great Canadian Lives: Portraits in Heroism to 1867
Available online here - not sure how with copyright

Basically covering from before 1600 to 1713 (A New Found Land, Settling the Land, and about 1/2 of The Great Days of New France)
(stop at "The Colony at Peace" - this gives about 60 portraits to do over the 36 weeks of school)

- My First History of Canada - by Donalda Dickie & Rudiger Krause First 9 Chapters. (Same time period as above)

Year 3 - continuing in Great Canadian Lives and My First History of Canada

Basically covering from 1713 to 1830 (1/2 of The Great Days of New France, After the Conquest, 1/2 of Danger on All Sides)
(start at "The Colony at Peace" and stop at "Building the Future" - this gives about 60 portraits to do over the 36 weeks of school)

Ch 10-13 of My First History

Year 4 - continuing in Great Canadian Lives and My First History of Canada

Basically covering from about 1830 to 1867 (1/2 of Danger on All Sides, From Sea to Sea)
(start at "Building the Future" and go to the end of the book - this gives about 60 portraits to do over the 36 weeks of school)

Ch 14-15 of My First History

Additional Reading:

The Last Safe House: A story of the Underground Railroad - Barbara Greenwood - add during the North to Freedom section.

Year 5 - My First History of Canada - other resources unknown at this point

Ch 16-19 + about 1/2 of 20

Covering from 1867 to about 1939.
Topics include, but not limited to:

RCMP

Gold Rush
WWI

Halifax Explosion

Famous 5 (women's rights)

Depression

Additional Reading:
Gold Rush Fever: a story of the Klondike, 1898 - Barbara Greenwood
Factory Girl - Barbara Greenwood

Year 6 - My First History of Canada - other resources unknown at this point

2nd half of Chapter 20, chapter 21

Covering from 1939 to present
Topics include, but not limited to:

WWII
Japanese Internment
Gov't help - UI, CPP, Family Allowance, Medicare
FLQ Crisis
Quebec Nationalism / Referendums
Canada Act

NOTE

Great Canadian Lives is unfortunately out of print, and can be expensive. Because it is used for 3 years, it may be worthwhile to purchase, especially if you have multiple children that will be using it. I will be using the library until I can find an inexpensive copy (our library has several copies). Update - there is a copy online here but as copyright is still in effect, not sure how they have it there....

However, if you can not find this resource in a manner that fits your budget, please feel free to replace it with seperate biographies of a few people within the various periods of history! (If you have any recommendations, please share!)

The Great Canadian Search

See History Plan

I have been having a lot of "fun" trying to figure out our Canadian History and Geography resources. Honestly, almost anytime I start reading a book about Canadian History - I'm about ready to fall asleep. It isn't that Canadian History is boring - because really it isn't. However - the way it was taught in school was horrible - and I really didn't retain much. Most of the bits of Canadian History that I know I learned later.

I haven't figured out if there just aren't any good living books about Canadian History - or if my school reflexes kick in. I'm starting to suspect the first. What I'd really like to find is a great "spine" book that has a lot of the basics of Canadian history in it - and then some good biographies and other books (historical fiction perhaps) to add to it. And I'm having problems finding them.

And I don't think I'm alone. It seems that on the cmcanada yahoo group, the question comes up regularily. And although there are usually some answers along the lines of "I'm using this" - I really don't remember anyone saying "we use this and it is totally fantastic!" or anything even close to it. Yes, there are some good recommendations of individual books - like the Barbara Greenwood books like we are using for Year 1.

I'm even having fun trying to figure out good Canadian Literature - especially for the early years. I do know some Canadian authors - mostly from school. But again - I ended up hating them in school.

So - there is my rant. I am checking out some Canadian history books from the library, to try to plan the Year 2 - 6 for Canadian History. I am open to suggestions!

Canadian History

See History Plan

Well, still working at getting Canadian resources together....

I think A Pioneer Story by Barbara Greenwood might be a good resource for year 1 or 2 - it is a fictional family, but is instructive on what live was like in parts of Canada in about 1840.

I have also found "Stories of the Maple Land" (Tales of the Early Days of Canada for Children) by Katherine Young (published 1898) - it seems to be from the viewpoint of a maple tree (at least at the beginning?) - probably also a year 1 or 2 resource....

Just a few thoughts on what I need to find yet.....

Something on the explorers, including Franklin
General Wolfe
The War of 1812 - hopefully find a good biography for Laura Secord
Alexander Graham Bell
1867 and the birth of Canada
The Famous 5 and the "Persons Act" - the 5 women that fought for women to be declared Persons
WWI heros
The Halifax Explosion
WWII heros
Banting and Best, and the discovery of Insulin
The Avro Arrow

Older students could watch the CBC History of Canada series - but not for younger students.

New Resource!!! - Canadian History through Literature list - I will be figuring out more through this resource.

Canadiana

As well as other little items to work with Canadian pride - something Canadians don't necessarily work towards.... - Stuff from "Canadian Minutes"

Also, want to make sure I cover Canadian Art..... one artist I tend to do more than once is Robert Bateman - who does amazing Natural Art.

Students will have a "Canadian" Notebook to note items of Canadian Pride
