Working for us Thursday - or is it Friday? Week in Review Too!

Ok - I'm late.  It has been a busy week, and I just am getting around to this entry.

So - what has been working for us?  Well, for quite a while, what has been working for us is CUBS and BEAVERS!

For those that might be confused - I'm not talking about animals.... I'm talking about Scouting.  And yes, in Canada - Scouting is Co-Ed!  This has worked out well, as Cubs and Beavers for our group meet at the same time, at the same place - so Delta, Echo, and Foxtrot are all at meetings at the same time.  Golf "hangs out" with Mike - we say she is in "Wanna-Bee's" because she "wants to be" a Beaver.  The more used term for this stage is being a "Bit" - a "Beaver in Training"....   And I'm not sure if I've mentioned it - but I'm a Cub leader (again!) with the group now too.

Back Row - Snowbird Technician;
Middle Row - Echo, Delta;
Front Row - Foxtrot, Golf
Delta is in his last year of Cubs.  He has earned so many badges, his arms are getting full.  I think the count is at about 42 - including Stars and Awards.  He only has a few Awards left to earn - and a few more badges on top of that.  He has also attended a Scout Activity and a Scout Camp, and will be invited to a few more Scout activities as the year goes on.  I suspect he will "Leap" up to Scouts in about April.

Echo is in her first year of Cubs, having completed 2 years of Beavers.  She is also enjoying the program, and has already earned 10 badges and 1 star.  She keeps eyeing Delta's badge chart as well as her own, deciding on what to work on next.

Foxtrot is in her first year of Beavers - being thrilled to no longer by a "Wanna-Bee".  She is enjoying fun activities, including making a Terrarium yesterday.

I suspect that Scouting will generally work for us - but will say up-front that it depends so much on the group.  Our first group was a big disappointment for us, and we had to switch the group.  But in a city there are usually a choice of groups.   If there isn't something that will work - there is also the possibility of doing things as a Lone.  It takes more motivation, but is definitely possible.

Just a few more points in the week -

  • Monday we went to the Remembrance Day Ceremonies.
  • Tuesday was a regular school day - with the bonus of having the car.... so we used some audiobooks.  We didn't go anywhere too interesting though.
  • Wednesday - Mike wasn't feeling well so he worked from home.  We didn't do regular school - but we went swimming in the afternoon to allow a quiet house for Mike.
  • Thursday - Another regular schoolday - and of course, Cubs and Beavers!
  • Friday - Echo and Delta are off to cub camp this evening.   We had our regular Friday - which I'll save for another blog.

Week so far

Hey everyone - just wanted to mention that I'm feeling a bit better since the other day.  The week is almost over, and tomorrow is our light day (just a few light subjects, and then timelines, picture study etc.)

Monday - well, I guess the April fool was on me, as I came down with a bad cough and cold that has kept me fairly miserable all week. I am hoarse, and overall sound and feel awful.   Delta was also not feeling well and didn't do school or swim lessons.    Echo worked on math practice sheets, spelling, and a reading or two.

Tuesday - I'm still sick - but Delta seems to be better.  We started with Reading Bears Fast-Track - which I've heard has done well with many kids to improve reading.  The rest of the day went about like normal.  Delta moved into the next step of All About Spelling 1.  I think Tuesday is also when Foxtrot finished Level A of RightStart Math  (or now that I think of it, that might have been last week....)

Wednesday - Yup, I'm still sick.  But as I've been asked to be a Cub leader again, I needed to go to the police station to order a Criminal Record Check to give to Scouts Canada.... so I declare a field trip.  We take the bus downtown, go to the police station, and take the bus back.  That counts, doesn't it?

Thursday - today. - Ok, I'm tired of being sick.  We did fairly full day, although we didn't do foreign language at all (or at all this week), and I didn't do copywork either.   I'm almost at a loss about what to do about copywork right now.  Delta avoids it if at all possible.  He does like it more if it is from his school work (quotes from Burgess Animal Book or Robin Hood) - but it does get tiring looking for quotes for him.   And Echo is making most of her letters wrong again, and I just haven't had the heart to get ready to start from scratch - which it looks like we will need to do....    I almost wish I could buy some copywork books for them  (maybe the Getty Dubay series....).

Yet another week has gone.

It seems like sometimes, there just doesn't seem to be much to write about.  I haven't had any new revelations or thoughts on homeschooling methods.  Nothing overly significant has happened this week.  Just ordinary life.  So here is a snapshot of the week.

Delta - Ok, I guess a bit has been happening here.  Delta finished his Term 2 early.  I think he did ok on his term exam, although there was a few "I don't remembers".   I have started showing him how to set goals in regards to school, and changed his planner a bit to make it easier to go with a goal-oriented method.  (He will be starting to use it next week.)  I have to admit that when I looked at the number of "subjects" or areas to set goals, it is quite a lot.  And AO readings are counted as one subject (not History, Literature, Science, etc...) - I wonder if I've added too much, even though I haven't really ADDED anything....

Echo - She has just finished up Term 2 yesterday, and will do her exam next week.  Right now, she is testing limits, and at times has little tantrums.  I seem to do ok at handling tantrums with little kids - but I admit that I'm not handling these well - I mostly send her to sit on her bed until she is in a better mood (sending her back if she comes out obviously still angry) - but she tends to bounce on her bed screaming at me.   I wonder if there is some food sensitivity or something causing problems.... but feel absolutely hopeless on changing how the family eats....  I don't know how people do it!

Foxtrot - Foxtrot is reading quite well, and is almost finished her RightStart Level A!  I'd like to put her into Level B, but don't have the worksheets..... so I may have to do lessons from "Activities for the Al Abacus" for a while, or just play lots of the card games (no harm in that either...)

Golf - Well, I have to say that Golf is quite potty trained!  YEAY!   She still has the occasional accident, but not very often (I'd say less than one a week...).   I still put her in a pull-up if we are going on a long car ride or something - but they stay dry generally.  She does wear a pull-up or diaper to bed - but even sometimes those are still dry too!

Mom - Well, my goal to practice the violin everyday has not happened at ALL this week.  I have been busy organizing stuff for the next term - and honestly after school is done, I am generally wiped out.  Needless to say that the kids haven't done any music either.  I don't know how other parents go to work all day, come home and make their kids do homework, practice, and go to activities too....   Maybe it takes less energy - I don't know.  Or maybe most moms are enough younger....

Week in Review - Jan 25, 2013

It is hard to believe - but as we finished our 18th week of AO this year - we are officially half way through the school year.  I am finding that things are going pretty well overall, although this has been a trying week.

Delta has finally been tested for some more badges in Cubs.  They have been so busy doing things (tours, or other unusual activities) that they haven't tested for badges in over 3 months.  Delta earned Swimming, the Blue Star, Observer, and Collector.  He will test next week for Camper and Home Repair.  (They didn't want to test them all the one day.)  As we will be taking a bit of a break from school next week, he may finish up more, who knows.  He has earned 5 of the 6 stars, and has his eye on that last star.  Then I'll have to point him towards the Awards.... hopefully they will keep him busy for the next year and a half of cubs!   He wants to do the snowboarding badge 0 but I can't figure out how we can possibly make that happen.

Echo has been having a tough week.  She has had tantrums - yelling at me that she doesn't want to read (whatever).  She hasn't wanted to do most of her AO readings this week - and she hasn't finished them for the week either.  Yesterday I had to suggest to her that it would be a shame for her to miss her Beaver meeting because she would have to stay home to do homework.  That made her more co-operative yesterday.  I'm hoping that her having to do her readings next week while Delta doesn't have to do any will help get her back on track.  Our diet has been a little less varied recently, and stress has been higher in general at home - so I suspect that one or both of those is affecting her.  She does have times when she is very eager to please and help out....

Foxtrot finished "Teach your child to read in 100 Easy Lessons" recently.  I'm not sure if I mentioned it or not.  So for reading now, she is reading from the Treadwell Primer one day, the Dick and Jane book (for the 2nd half of grade 1) "Our New Friends" on another day, and she is reading "Make Way for Ducklings" to me on the other two.   I have started working on basic handwriting too - as she is already writing a lot, so I want to instill good habits.  Although we use Italics, I find the Penny Gardner Italics program really just skims through capital letters.  I figured I'd start with the capitals, as that is what Foxtrot is writing in on her own.  So - I'm using the Peterson Directed Handwriting pages for print - just for the Capital Letters.  She is doing great in RightStart A level as well - I think she is well over 1/2 of the way through.

Golf has also been busy - she is potty training!  Ok, honestly I only started with her when I did (the middle of winter is NOT the best time!) because we were short on diapers one day.  But she had shown signs of knowing when she was "going" before that....  and she is doing well!  There were a couple of days after we started when I felt so bad for her.  She didn't want to go.... anywhere.  Not on the toilet, not in a potty, not in underwear, and not in a diaper either.  So she spent most of those 2 days crying that she had to go but she didn't want to.  I ended up sitting her on the potty when it was obvious an accident was about to occur, even though she didn't want to.  She'd go, and would be fine for a short while, and then the crying and tantrums would start again.  Ah well, it all worked out.  She rarely (but does occasionally) has accidents.  She even comes out of naps dry most days.  I have her in just training pants and a t-shirt at home.  When we go out - I just put her in a diaper for now.  With the other kids I took a potty in the van so we could pull over and let them use the potty if needed.  I'd have a folding toilet seat for in stores or wherever.  But it is too cold to use the potty in the van (Mike is probably relieved...) - and I need to buy a new folding seat.  So for now, we are just having her use a diaper when out.

Other bits of news - we have started using "All About Spelling".  Delta was just having problems with spelling, and I couldn't figure out how to help him in a CM way - so after trying a couple of things - this made the most sense.  Echo was also interested, and so I'm doing it with her too.  They are both in Level 1.  Foxtrot is also interested, but I want her to be able to write her letters properly first.  I only got one student pack.  When a child gets a card added into the review area, I write their initial at the bottom of the card.  When they master it, a small star sticker in their colour covers up their initial.  When all children using that card have mastered it, it moves to the mastered area.  So far it is working well.  It probably reduces the resale value slightly - but I figure that by the time 4 kids have used it, any resale value is a bonus anyway.

I considered entering the AAS cards into our Anki Flashcard program (which handles the review frequency better) - but I already know from experience that I don't like using Anki for spelling anyway.  I need to have the child faced away from me so they can't see the computer screen - and I'm facing away from them, and it just doesn't work.  I may reconsider Anki in the future - if the sharing of the cards with the kids proves to be too hard to handle.

We didn't have the 2'x3' magnetic white board - so I made a file-folder board using magnetic tape to hold the tiles - similar to this one.  I'd love to make one with little metal boards, like this one, but I can't find the inexpensive metal boards.  The closest I could find here, was 9x12 magnetic lap boards from a school supply store - at $8 each.  As I'd need 4, that would be $32 - plus it wouldn't fit in file folders, so I'd have to work them differently.  Doing a google search I found a set of 5 for $15 at amazon that I might consider buying at some point... but it isn't happening right now.   The file folders are working ok for now - with just the alphabet on, usually only 1 or 2 tiles fall out of place.  But I know that when all the tiles are on, quite a few seem to fall off.  (I tried it out...) - I keep all of the paper stuff, teacher's book, and the folder board in a little plastic portfolio folder sleeve thingie from the dollar store.  The cards, stickers, unused tiles, etc are kept in a little storage box from the dollar store too.  It is big enough for a bit of expansion - I'm using bubble wrap to fill the extra spots.

In other areas - Math is going ok for Delta and Echo in Level C.  They aren't at the 1/2 way mark of the level though.  As many kids take 1.5 years for level C, this shouldn't bother me.  It does more than I'd like though.  We aren't playing the games as often as we should - and we aren't doing practice sheets.  Bad mommy.  I guess I should just get over the getting it done this year, and do more games and stuff.  They are doing fine though.  They are into the drawing lessons.  I had ended up with 2 of most of the drawing tools (the T-square, both types of triangles etc) - but only had 1 drawing board.  Well - I was at a dollar store and found an artist canvas that is almost the exact same size.  It seems to be square - and for $1.25 I figured it was worth a try.  Well, it is working perfectly!  We are actually using the back side (it is smoother) - but I can do the lessons together still!

As for me - I'm still trying to work out modifications to AO for Year 3.  The specifics.... which chapter read when, etc.  And I'm trying to find a Canadian replacement for Squanto.  Something around the same time period (roughly) that is about the same length and difficulty.  And available inexpensively (or free).  And is living.  And of course is in Canada.  I'm not having much luck.... sigh.  I'm also looking at which options we are choosing within Year 3.  So many things to work out, and only 8 or 9 months to do it in!  I guess it is also time to do our report to the government.  I hate those!

Week in Review - Dec 7, 2012

I don't do these very often, but thought you might like to know what we are doing recently!

We have just started Term 2 of our AO year.  So for Delta, he is in term 2 of Year 2; Echo is in term 2 of Year 1.  Things have been going quite well this year overall - once we got the routine going.  That said - I made a minor change this term....

I decided to try having Friday being a "Family Studies" day.... instead of having a Rotation of things like Hymn Study and Folk Songs, and Drawing, etc.... (that often seemed to never happen) - these will now happen on Friday.

Here is a breakdown of our new Fridays!  They will go roughly in this order.... but not always

  • Scriptures (everyday)
  • Memory Work  (everyday)
  • PhysEd  (5BX or XBX)
  • Hymn Study
  • Composer Study (will probably try to have this playing in the background mostly)
  • Picture Study
  • Mapping
  • Timeline
  • German Songs
  • ASL Songs
  • Folk Songs
  • Drawing
  • Poetry
  • Math Lesson (usually a game)
  • Leftover Readings from the AO Week (or a Free Reading)
  • Nature Study

I think this is going to work out well.  That said - we haven't done Nature Study yet... (sigh).  But most of the rest was done - and I hope to get things going smoothly by having things prepared the day before.

Oh, one other change I made - I've taken our scripture memory box - found out which scriptures Delta and Echo knew well... and made scripture cards in different colours for each child.  Doing it together as a family wasn't working for Foxtrot - and sometimes Delta and Echo didn't know them either. This seems to work better so far.

As for the rest of the week - here is the basic plan we use...   I do mostly encourage them to do it in order (because I have it setup to try to vary items - and they are more likely to miss things if they do it out of order.)  They have a list of the AO (and modifications) Readings for the week, and choose when to do them.  This is working out great - I remember our first year trying AO I had things assigned on certain days - and we ended up being on Week 12 of some book, Week 9 of another, etc...  it got confusing.  But by just having times scheduled to read from the list, with the rule that they must finish the readings from one week before starting the next - well, it is so simple!  And as a bonus - I get to find out which books they love and which ones they really don't....

  • Scriptures
  • Memory Work
  • PhysEd (5BX or XBX)
  • Copywork (& Dictation)
  • Readings from List
  • Foreign Language (German one day, ASL the next...)
  • Readings from List
  • Math
  • Free Reading
So - what are we up to?

Delta
  • Enjoying learning about the Crusades and Richard the Lion Heart. He can't wait to start Robin Hood next term.
  • Doing great with RightStart Math.
  • Writing quite neatly with Joined Italic.  Moving towards no longer using a middle line, and then copying from another book (no model)
  • Loving Tree in the Trail
  • Was thrilled that Understood Betsy is done.  (He never liked that book....)
  • Wants to draw a map of Tree in the Trail (although the other week he said of the Crusades.....)
Echo
  • Discovered that Moroni hid the plates close to the time that the Romans left Britain.  (You have to love timeline books!)
  • Enjoying RightStart Math level C
  • Doing much better at writing with Italic.  She was thrilled to be moved to using the Copywork Jar.  She does still sometimes write letters/numbers backwards still (something she has always struggle with more than the other kids.)
  • Loves Paddle to the Sea
Foxtrot
  • Is on Lesson 90 in "Teach your Child to read in 100 Easy Lessons".  She is also reading books on her own to herself.
  • LOVES RightStart Math Level A
  • We are starting "Drawing with Children"... and I did the evaluation exercises to see where to start - she is firmly in Level 2!  Wow!
  • Is happy to have her own Scripture to learn
  • Enjoys Picture Study - wishes she had her own "Masterpieces" Album.  (That is something they get when they start Year 1 - as a special thing....)
Golf
  • Loves to play with Tally Sticks and Tiles while I do math with Foxtrot.
  • Loves drawing and colouring (and is definitely Right Handed)
Well - not sure how interesting this is - but that is what is going on here!
